Phoebe is a French woman who is based in Tokyo, and freelance writer.
I've interviewed her amazing life!
What is your profession?
I am a freelance writer. I write articles about Japan society and culture for Francophone Media. It can be newspaper (as Le Figaro for instance) or media specialised in Japanese culture or travels.
Why did you come to Japan?
I came in Japan to finish my M.A thesis about Ama-san (Japanese women divers) in 2015. My major was Japanese Anthropology and I was specialised in gender studies.
I chose ama-san as a subject because despite the fact they live in a patriarchal society, they are not considered as women in their fishing communities as they are the one that bring money for the household like husbands usually do and they also do a very physical activity. I have found the subject really interesting.
Why it was Japan?
I have always like documentaries since I am a child and doing something about speaking about foreign cultures has always be my dream. One day, I have found a documentary at TV about Japan and I found the landscapes amazing. I was 14 or 15.
After that, I started to buy books about Japan (mostly photos books that make you dream to travel lol) and I watched some drama (I think the first one was Nodame no Cantabile). Drama are fictions, but they can teach you a lot about everyday life. More and more I discovered about Japan, more and more I like the culture, so when I had to choose a specialisation at university, I choose Japanese culture.
How did you get you profession now? Please tell us about your career path.
Did you like writing when you were a child? What did you study in university?
Let’s start by my university studies (sorry it may be a bit long lol).
After High School, I have studied Mathematics for one year. It was a special major called ‘’maths sup’’ in French, very selective, which leads to prestigious school called ‘’grandes écoles’’ (ex: HEC, Les mines, etc.).
I was not interested in mathematics, but as I was a really good student (always top of the year), my parents told me it would be better to do this as it is selective and maybe become an engineer. Actually, my father wanted me to become and engineer and my mother wanted me to become a doctor. As I am scared of blood, I choose the engineer path lol.
After one year, I realised it wasn’t for me. It was really competitive and I wasn’t interested at all in robotics or mathematics despite I had good marks.
After this year, I choose to do something that I liked and I enrolled in Burgundy University as a sociology major students. There, I was able to take a lot of options. I am workaholic and I always want to learn a lot of news things, so as I was able to take options, I took a lot lol
Among them, there were law, social psychology, environments science and Japanese.
Phoebe’s life is very interesting.
She’s been challenging many things and moving one place to another.
